Background
Steve Demetriou is a lifelong Northeast Ohioan, West Point graduate, Army veteran, small business owner, and current State Representative whose career has been defined by service and results. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy with Dean’s List honors and a degree in economics, he commissioned as an Army infantry officer, earned both his Ranger tab and Airborne wings, and deployed to Afghanistan, where he led an infantry platoon and earned the Bronze Star Medal for his service.
Following his military career, Demetriou became an entrepreneur—growing a small business from three employees to over sixty in just three years and later helping run multiple family owned enterprises. His experience managing payrolls, navigating regulation, and overcoming challenges like COVID era labor shortages deeply shaped his belief that government must work for job creators, not against them.
In the Ohio House, Demetriou has delivered property tax relief, championed parental empowerment and school choice, and advanced conservative reforms. He currently serves on committees related to development, small business, and technology.
Motivation to Run for Office
Steve Demetriou is running for Ohio Senate to continue fighting for Northeast Ohio’s families, taxpayers, and conservative values. He believes Ohio needs leaders guided by service, integrity, and accountability—not career politicians or bureaucratic insiders. His experience at West Point and in combat taught him servant leadership; his experience as a business owner taught him economic resilience.
Policy Positions
Economic Freedom
Demetriou is a strong advocate for lower taxes, cutting red tape, and market driven economic growth. In the Ohio House, he’s supported property tax relief, backed implementation of a flat income tax, and introduced legislation to revise Ohio’s income tax laws to make the state more competitive for workers and job creators.
His business experience gives him firsthand understanding of how government rules affect employers. He has championed reforms to reduce regulatory burdens, modernize economic frameworks, and expand opportunities for entrepreneurs—including supporting legislation related to blockchain, cryptocurrency, and emerging technologies to ensure Ohio stays on the cutting edge.
Education Opportunity
Steve Demetriou is a committed advocate for school choice and parental rights. He has fought to expand educational freedom, including supporting the Backpack Bill and prioritizing policies that give parents a stronger voice in their children’s learning environments.
Demetriou believes every child deserves access to high quality education, and he opposes bureaucratic systems that put institutions ahead of students.
Government Modernization
Demetriou has consistently supported efforts to make Ohio government more efficient, transparent, and accountable. He’s cosponsored major budget reforms, backed measures that streamline land banking and foreclosure processes, and has supported initiatives to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse in public spending.
His voting record reflects strong support for limited government, protection of property rights, and reforms that modernize regulatory systems—especially in emerging technology sectors where outdated frameworks can stifle innovation.
Energy Abundance
Demetriou believes Ohio must pursue an energy strategy centered on competition, affordability, and reliability. He’s played a role in energy oversight during a period of heightened scrutiny following the HB 6 scandal and has supported reforms that clean up corruption and strengthen utility accountability.
He voted in support of House Bill 15, a comprehensive, market driven energy reform package that boosts power generation, holds utilities accountable, eliminates loopholes, reduces unnecessary fees, and expands Ohio’s energy grid through competitive infrastructure investments. He supports policies that keep rates low for consumers while expanding the state’s ability to meet current and future energy needs.
